With all the comforts of home and true western hospitality,
the Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch is a favorite destination for fly anglers
and nonfishermen alike. With two chains of spring-fed trophy trout lakes
and private access on the Big Thompson River, anglers can find solitude
and an excellent chance to enter "The 24-Inch Club." Thus
begins a description of Sylvan Dale in the brand new Fly Fisher's Guide
to Colorado, by Marty Bartholomew.
Our clients find some of the biggest and hardest fighting fish in these waters and usually have these monsters all to themselves. Fishing from the banks is very productive, although a float tube can come in handy at times. These fish key on the hatch, so you could fish midge larva, mayfly dries, and wolly buggers all in the same day. |

Ed Engle, local fishing writer, said that "one of the pleasures
at Sylvan Dale is that the trout were not that easy. This isn't the
case in some ranch lakes where large dumb fish are stocked on a regular
basis. Apparently the trout are stocked at smaller sizes at Sylvan Dale
and allowed to "grow" into the environment. This gives them
a measure of wildness that you don't get with trout that are stocked
at size. The bigger fish are keyed to the rich aquatic insect life in
the spring-fed lakes and in most cases you do need to match what they
are used to eating." |
